What's wrong with most luxury brands?

October 4, 2026

An idea that’s been spinning in my head for a long time... And that I finally decided to turn into this blog post!

Like any normal person, since it's officially fall, I decided to get some new warm pieces, like knitwear or outerwear. And I have to admit that luxury brands are no longer that ultimate go-to place where I really feel like buying something new. So, what's wrong with most luxury giants? Reflecting on that in this post. Because honestly, it’s a cry from the heart!

Like most people  I’ve gone through  (I think I always willl... maybe in not such a drastic way) a style evolution. Well, trends and societal moods are always shifting. We know that. But my personal journey was the following. From a teen's style experiments and childlike spontaneity to some kinda exaggerated glamorous style, then there was a period of total minimalism... and then that anbsolutely freedom when I can put on a vintage kimono, or a leopard printed dress, or a maxi denim skirt, or a zipped pullover. And in every single case, I am still me. I wear the clothes, the clothes don't wear me.

I’ve put so much time and effort into shaping my personal taste into what you can see today. And I’m not at all ashamed to admit my mistakes, my weaknesses, or what used to be my vulnerabilities. As you know, I always prefer to keep it 100% real.

So, what’s wrong with so many luxury brands? And I don’t mean the ones that set fresh trends, walk on thin ice and sometimes shock us... No, surprisingly, they are doing just fine. They find their audience and know exactly what they’re doing. I’m talking about Saint Laurent, Alaïa, Chanel - please, don’t worry about them. I’m talking about those brands whose clothes feel so heavy, so desperate to scream their price tag, and so utterly cluttered with details... that they are completely stripped of any vitality or lightness.

And just to be clear, I’m not talking about minimalism. Nor am I talking about clothes that never claimed to be ultra fashionable. Not everyone wants to be a true fashionista, and that’s okay. I'm talking about an overkill of decor and those extremely complicated details and designs.

Let me make a caveat here! A complicated and sometimes (in a good sense!) quirky style or shape, like what we see from many Korean, Japanese, and Chinese brands - that's just  amazing. Because they - mind you! - use irony! There is a sense of playfulness and lightness to it. The people who create these clothes and the people who wear them don’t lack a sense of humor, they aren't trying to look super rich and stuffy. And that’s great! They live outside of trends, which means they can never go out of style.

The real issue, honestly, is the total lack of irony. It’s the old-fashioned, dated vibe!!! I always remind you that we need to tone down expensive items that scream luxury. My favorite example is my vintage Chanel Jumbo! I'd never wear it with a Chanel jacket, high heels and tons of fine jewelry. Never! I only style it with jeans, mini skirts, sneakers, or a leather jacket... Because I’m definitely not trying to add extra an 50 years to my real age.

An old-fashioned look, unjustified pomposity, an overkill of misplaced details, and bizarre color combinations! Surprisingly, I see all that so often with luxury brands! That's absolutely terrible...

There should only be one statement piece... and the one that is cool and appropriate. But when you’re wearing a sweater that shines like a Christmas tree, yet has a huge logo on it, yet there's an embroidered collar there... it’s just a total disaster and nothing can save the look! You know what I mean? All those grandma coats, sickly-sweet sweaters, and "iron lady" dresses (I trust those kinda ladies don't read my blog anyway, they have nothing to do here), that's just terrible. And when they cost an arm and a leg on top of that, I must admit I start having questions.
